The business is growing with a list of key clients and a backlog of work, and the organization is looking to hire an experienced Director to support the existing business practice areas as well as support expanding the types of projects and clients we serve.

Requirements and responsibilities could include, among others:
- Lead and provide direction to projects and deliver high quality of work to our clients ensuring projects are delivered to schedule, scope, and budget with limited oversight.
- Lead powertrain product development processes for client projects, using common industry tools such as V-Model for systems engineering, FMEAs, DVP&Rs & ISO 26262.
- Conduct background literature reviews, define and execute experiments, analyze data, interpret results, and present findings in presentations and reports.
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects and workstreams concurrently.
- Lead preparation and presentation of client reports.
- Support new business generation and lead proposal development for prospective clients.
- Identify growth opportunities in the electrification space and new energy sectors.
- Support new business pursuit in the traditional and advanced powertrain spaces.
- Grow business with existing clients and identify client needs regarding new projects.
- Use background in emission control systems, alternative powertrains, alternative fuels, and zero-emission technologies and apply critical thinking to resolve complex client needs and establish appropriate studies and testing campaigns.
- Perform background technology assessment and research to inform technical roadmaps, field test work, and technical reports that include analysis of powertrains, fuels, and emissions.
- Guide powertrain controls and calibration development studies and analysis.
- Process and assemble data into reports, interpret results, and identify next steps.
- Ability to think on your feet, adjust the action plan and take other measures to maintain project control.
- Interpret regulatory requirements and guide clients in the technical paths required for product compliance, homologation, and certification.
- The position is based out of the Detroit Metro Area or 44 Energy’s Oakland, California headquarters, although flexibility for remote work location will be considered.
- Ability to communicate effectively to all levels and manage a small team of direct reports. Travel up to ~25% primarily within the US with potential for periodic international travel.
Education, Skills, and Qualifications:
- B.S. or (preferred) M.S. in relevant engineering field – Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering preferred with other closely related disciplines considered (i.e., Aerospace). An MBA is considered a differentiator.
- Prior extensive experience, at least 15 years, with automotive OEM, on-road and/or off- road heavy-duty OEM, Tier 1 supplier, or Automotive Consultant preferred.
- Engine / powertrain calibration experience, including ICE, HEV.
- Powertrain controls development for ICE, HEV, and EV.
- Vehicle calibration experience, including ICE, HEV, and EV.
- Engine and powertrain modeling for ICE vehicles, HEVs, and EVs desired.
- Data Analysis experience, especially with time-based data recordings and/or statistical analysis.
- Broad design-analysis and problem-solving skills and toolset (6-Sigma tools, DFMEA, DVP&R, other robustness tools, 8-D, fishbone, A3, etc.)
- ISO 26262 expertise – able to teach/coach customers & 44 Energy team.
- Project management experience and familiarity with project management tools, with formal training desirable.
- Broad understanding of powertrain / vehicle instrumentation including Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS), dynamometers, and other emissions/fuel economy equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform advanced engineering analysis of complex datasets and assemble analysis into sophisticated reports with graphical interpretation of data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are critical.
- Ability to interface and communicate with clients in a knowledgeable, professional manner.
- Fluency in at least one programming language (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW, or similar) desired.
- Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary range $160,000 – $180,000 / year, depending on qualifications and experience.
